On average, 10 tonnes of earth are excavated for each carat of emerald recovered.
Therefore in the jewellery sector there is a need to evolve material research to maximize opportunities of usage and purpose. Resource efficiency is key to minimize the impact on the environment and deliver greater value to the existing by-products of emerald extraction. It is time to challenge traditional ways of defining, designing and producing jewellery, driving innovation in a sustainable context in line with people’s morals and values. The use of the morralla emerald can contribute to reposition social, environmental and value perception of the stone by upscaling its usability. It may also be possible to draw attention to a better disposal, handling and sorting in the emerald mining industry.
A clasp link called “LiLO” (link&lock) made with an emerald by-product called Morralla, and recycled metals that will work as a connector and contribute to the modularity of chain jewellery while maintaining a clean and cohesive aesthetic. The concept idea is based on the deconstruction and rearrangement of interchangeable links to form multiple combinations of chains. The aim is to make a user-friendly link-lock that will serve as the bridge to connect and reuse chain links making it a unique, interactive and enjoyable experience.
